Recently, I joined the Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan. When you join, they give you a book of trail maps for the entire state. In this book I found a place called The Mounds, or 13 Mounds. A quick googling of "13 mounds trails" and I came up with Lynn's site.
Cool! A place to ride trails within about an hour from me! I emailed the posse, but carlos was the only one to step up to the plate.
We had planned on meeting up there at 10:00 am on Friday. Well, Carlos had some BS to deal with at home, so he didn't arrive 'til about noon. That was ok though, 'cause that meant I had time to make a trip to Rocky's Great Outdoors in Burton (they don't have a website, so I can't link to them). If you're in the Flint area, check out this store. It's basically half hunting and camping type stuff, half motorcycle stuff. Be prepared to spend money when you go there, it's hard not to find something you "need".
Ok, so finally Carlos got his butt up there, and the KLR wouldn't start. Something in the starter relay was going haywire. Carlos made up for being late when he fixed my bike by hitting the relay with a stick. Finally, we hit the trails, me on the KLR, Carlos on his quad.
We got riding and the trails were great. This place could get hectic on the weekends. Even this day, when there were only four or five cars in the parking area, we met up with a couple guys nearly head on. No matter, this place is fun!
After hitting some mudholes and water crossings, we hit the scramble area. Carlos wanted me to get air, and I was being kinda timid. Then he fully coached me, comparing it to doing an ollie on a skateboard. His coaching worked, and I busted my first (mini) air on the KLR (or any bike, for that matter). Now I'll shut up and let the pics do the talking.
If you have a high speed connection, check out these video clips too (they're about 1 MB each):
